I’ve been lucky enough to be one of Michaels Makers, a group chosen by Michaels stores representing some of the most creative and inspirational craft and lifestyle bloggers from across the country, for almost a whole year now. What a humbling honor to be a part of such an aaah-mazing group of writers (somebody pinch me). As a toast to the last Michaels Makers post of the season, we created gifts, baked treats and threw parties for each of the six holidays this summer; my chosen holiday was Father’s Day. While I love celebrating any holiday, getting to honor my special guy is one of my favorites because he does so much for us every single day of the year. We love him so! To show him just how much we love him, I had our son make him a DIY Handprint Travel Mug. He can safely carry his hot coffee around in a mug that he can treasure for years to come. Afterall, the handprint won’t be this little forever.
DIY Handprint Travel Mug
Materials:
Chalkboard Travel Mug
White multi-surface paint
Multi-surface oil based paint pen
Spouncer
Paper plate
Directions:
Add a dollop of paint to the paper plate. Using the spouncer dab a thin layer of paint onto your child’s hand.
Help them place their hand gently onto the front surface of the mug. Be very careful not to move it around once it’s on the mug. Press their fingers and palm in lightly to make sure that the entire hand will be marked on the mug. Gently remove the hand (stop everything and wash their hands before they start to touch stuff!).
Allow to dry for about an hour.
Have your child write or draw anything they like on the white painted area. My son chose to simply write Daddy’s name: “Dad” on the mug in bright blue. Blue is his favorite color, so he knows Daddy will love it!
Bake it! To make sure the paint stays put over time, place the mug on a cookie sheet and into a 350º oven for about 30 minutes. Remove from the oven, and let it cool.
It’s never too early to get started on your next party or celebration, Michaels.com has more project ideas and instructions for you and your kids to make this year, check out projects for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, graduation, birthday and even summer. Let’s celebrate!
While you’re on the Michaels site, check out their most recent Maker Monday post–they interviewed me! To see the rest of my Michaels projects click here!
Happy {Summer} Holidays!
