Scripture Sign |
Signs, signs, everywhere a sign…I love to decorate with signs! When my husband asked me to make one for our entry way with this Joshua bible verse he loves, I jumped at the chance! I knew exactly what I’d use to make this. As you may remember, I have a LOT of scrap wood sitting in my garage as depicted in this post where I explained how the hubs brings home scrap wood (in lieu of flowers?), so what did I have to lose?!
I grabbed about 9 planks of wood (evenly cut into about 15″ pieces) and started a-gluin’.
I used 7 pieces for the wording and 2 for the back to hold it all together. Once all my pieces were glued together (some more resourceful folks may have used wood glue, I went ahead and grabbed my glue gun-same result!) and I’d let it dry completely, I used a drill to make small holes in the back and then hammered nails in there to make sure the planks were secure (2 nails per plank, 14 total).
I picked up some stencils and a small bottle of acrylic white paint at the Big W (you may call it Walmart) and I borrowed a skinny paint brush from my step daughters art set. All and all I spent a grand total of $5. YUP just 5 buckaroos. Even if I had to get the wood cut at HD (or Home Depot to you), it would only add a couple more dollars. I warn you this project is only for the truly thrifty!
Since it was raw wood, it really soaked up gallons (a wee exaggeration) of the stain, so I needed to brush on about 3 coats. The waiting for the stain to dry overnight was the hardest part, because people I have NO patience. None!
In the meantime I taped my letters together to form words..as with anything tedious, I recommend sitting in front of your tv and letting your DVR entertain you whilst you do this. Once the stain was totally dry (agony), I just stenciled the wording on and stood back and tooted my own horn! Kidding! But I wanted to.
I stole re-purposed a wire hanger from an unused frame I had laying around and once again drilled in some holes and secured it on to the back.
It sits over our front door to remind us daily whom we serve.
I know, it’s a wee bare there, I am working on my foyer..another post on that later!
Easy and super thrifty weekend project! Try it and leave me a comment, I’d love to see your version of this!
Love, Barbara

It looks absolutely beautiful above your door! The variation in the stain of each plank really makes it. Of course, it’s also a fantastic verse for your family to see all the time as they pass through that door.
Found you through Imparting Grace, btw!

Thanks Erica! It serves as a wonderful reminder as we walk out the door every day. Thank you for stopping by!
