How To Eliminate Fruit Flies {Hint: Use Heinz Apple Cider Vinegar!}

Hey friends!  I’m here to talk to you about an embarrassing problem. WE HAVE FRUIT FLIES!  What did you think I was going to say? 🙂

We get them every summer since we moved into this house.  Despite having tried anything and everything to get rid of them we’ve had no success.  After almost an entire summer of storing our fruit in the fridge instead of the bowl, and having to disinfect the counters after every single use to make sure those pesky critters don’t come after the microscopic crumb left behind, I’d just about had it! Don’t even get me started on the trash can.

We realized that they are attracted to sweet scents.  After some internet research my husband had a light-bulb moment: Apple Cider Vinegar!

Do you have this problem?

Here’s how to eliminate fruit flies once and for all:

Materials:

Cup {plastic or ceramic is fine}

Plastic Wrap

Rubber band

1/4-1/2 cup of Heinz Apple Cider Vinegar

Toothpick

Directions:

Pour the Heinz Apple Cider Vinegar in the cup.  Add a piece of plastic wrap over the top, wrapping it taught, securing the plastic wrap with the rubber band.  Poke small holes on top of the plastic with a toothpick {or another sharp object}.  It’s very important to make sure that the holes are large enough for the fruit flies to get in, but not so large that they fly right out!

In our case the fruit flies started to hover over the cup immediately.  Within about an hour there were a few inside, and by the next day we noticed less fruit flies in the kitchen.  By week’s end, they were completely gone!

In the couple of weeks since, we haven’t seen any more fruit flies at all.  I am now able to place the fruit back in the fruit bowl, and the trash can is nice and fresh again!

Eliminating fruit flies is just one of the many uses for for Heinz Apple Cider Vinegar.  I’ve always used vinegar for general cleaning; did you know you can replace your traditional window cleaner with vinegar?  It works beautifully!

Another great option is Heinz Unfiltered All Natural Apple Cider Vinegar.

Get Shiny Hair With A Vinegar Rinse

As part of your hair cleansing routine, just mix 1 part vinegar with one part cool water.  Add it to your hair after washing and conditioning.  Leave it on for a few minutes and rinse it off.  It makes my hair much easier to manage when wet, adds volume and shine. The salad smell goes away once your hair is dry…promise!

    I have used this trick – works like a charm. I had a couple extra small mason jars…I poked holes in the the top with a nail and hammer. Now if I see a fruit fly, I just put a bit of apple cider vinegar in them, add a drop of dish soap (breaks the tension and they drown faster), and set them out. Problem gone! Yippee!

      Robyn, you’re right, using the dish soap coats their wings and they can’t fly – therefore drowning. Also makes for easier disposal when you need to get rid of the little darlings. We have this issue every summer.
