Repurposed Desk Into Entry Table
Sometimes you need to see beyond an object’s intended purpose to discover its true potential. I’ve come to this realization more and more as I’ve been decorating my new (to me) home.
A few weeks ago I made over a desk that I got for FREE (still can’t believe that!) on Craigslist. I was in LOVE with how it turned out! The beautiful rich blue, the lively and trendy brass pulls, the pretty details in the wood, I can go on and on, but you get the idea, I heart it! I thought I should probably sell it, but the hubs objected to having strangers coming to the house to see it, etc., yeah I guess he was right (sigh), and secretly I was relieved (he, he, he). It’s large and very heavy, and just not something I wanted sitting in my garage for ever. I had no need or space for another desk in the house, although deep down inside, I wanted to keep it really badly!!
The more I swooned over it, the more I wanted it! After some serious thought (about a day), as usual, my heart won this battle. This was going to be in my home even if I have to remove my couch to make room for it. Right around that time is when the light bulb went off (happening a lot these days!). I will make room for it, and it will be next to my couch, in fact it will be re-purposed in to a sofa table! Better yet, a sofa table that will also serve as an entry table. Re-purposing the re-purposed! YEAH!
Not only is it a looker (in my eyes!!), but it’s WAY functional too! That large basket where the chair should be is used to store backpacks and other unsightly (sorry, kids) things. The basket on top is used for keys, wallets, pocket change, and lots more. And since my family has a problem with using their bedroom closets for actually storing items like shoes, check this out:
Everyone has a spot for their shoes! Easy to store when they get home, easy to find on their way out. I organized it so that my husband gets the top drawer, my stepdaughter and myself share the middle drawer, and my youngest boys get the one on the bottom. If the shoes don’t fit, then they must go upstairs–that’s the rule! So far this is actually working!
I seriously don’t even think of it as a ‘desk’ anymore. It’s my sofa/entry table, it’s unique and I looovves!
You really can use furniture pieces to serve a different purpose than what was originally intended. If you own it, you can make it anything YOU want it to be!
Have you re-purposed a piece of furniture?

Hi Barbara, I’m Barbara too (aka Barbe) and a fellow Californian! : ) I’m also your newest follower and found your blog via Feathered Nest Friday! I just re-purposed a desk also, but I cut it in half to make a nightstand with the drawer half and a small table with the other half. I hope you’ll follow back.

Fabulous idea. I think the color is great, too. I love that you conquered the shoe monster. Good for you.

I found your blog from the linky party over at Grace At Home. This is a terrific project — I love that color of blue! I have an old desk buried in storage that I’m going to have to get out and see what I can do with it now. :D

Yes, of course you can use furniture in ways that it was never intended–I think that makes it more fun! I have an antique desk on my front porch acting as a side table–I love it there! :)
Thanks for joining Grace at Home!
