I like to buy thrift. No I don’t like junk, or broken items, or filthy things. Eeew. I like to give new life to something that has been overlooked by its previous owner. And I like to do that with little money. Very.Little.Money.
Enter this lime green gem:
Yes, pretty as it is, I agree. Completely functional, and just $4.99 at Goodwill. SA-HOLD (or ‘sold’). I was looking for a glossy white base, and a black shade. Neither of which I found at the GW, so I took my little green friend home and picked up a brand new (gasp!) shade at Tar-Jay (or Target)for $8.
This was an easy project, perfect for a ‘get off your lazy butt on a Sunday afternoon’ state of mind.
Taped the top just to cover the wiring, since the bulb base was already white. Also added a little tape to the clear cord, just in case (in case I got paint on it anyway, which I did. Sigh).
I used Rustoleum Gloss White spray paint.. after 2 coats it covered really well.
In between coats I took out a can of Rustoleum Satin Black, and just went over the shade lightly (about 3 quick coats). YES YOU CAN SPRAY PAINT FABRIC. Enlightening isn’t it? It’s true!
I tried to keep the paint from splattering on the inside of the shade and failed miserably (‘epic fail’ I believe is what the youngsters are saying these days). So if you can’t beat ’em, you guessed it–I sprayed the inside all black as well!
There really is no point in getting a manicure if you are a DIY’er.
Once both pieces were completely dry…(an entire Mad Men episode, followed by one Celebrity Apprentice, and an evening news), I put them together and ended up with this prettiness!
I looove the glossy white! This is the color combo my stepdaughter chose for her room, isn’t it awesome?! That blue in the background almost acts like the neutral and the black and white as the accent colors. Backwards? Perhaps. Awesome? YES! Her room is a work in progress, and I can’t wait to show it off when it’s done!
Notice the formerly Pepto pink tray that I simply sprayed white and painted the black design on with acrylic paint, and a stencil-of course! I went crazy and bought the little container at a regular store (gasp again!). Ok fine it was $3.99 at Michael’s—HA!
Making a BIG impact can be easy, quick, and way budget friendly! A pretty new lamp for $13 top to bottom?
SA-HOLD!
