What do you do when you want to hang something on the wall, but it comes with no hook or hanging apparatus? For example, plates and DIY art, how do you hang them?
I shared this DIY tip over at The Girl Creative {where I contribute regularly}, a few weeks ago, but if you missed it, here it is!
Today I’m sharing the gallery wall I put together in my kitchen, specifically how I hung those plates up easily and for little to no cost!
DIY Plate Hanger
I threw this wall together in a snap. Most of the signs are second hand finds, or from Home Goods, or gifts, and the ‘eat’ sign was a DIY project from last year. The plates are from the thrift stores; they are regular white plates not intended to hang but rather to eat on!
Using my Cricut, I cut out large numbers, and the wording ‘Our Happy Home’, along with a lattice pattern. The numbers, which represent the months that our kids were born, were placed on the round white plates. The oval plate was painted with grey gloss paint. I’m not crazy about the plate hangers that are sold at stores. I especially don’t like the price tag! At $3+ a pop, it’s easy to spend a mini fortune!
How to DIY Plate Hangers
Materials:
Plates
Gorilla glue {or a strong adhesive}
Paper clips
{I used small clips, but you can use larger clips depending on the size of your plate}
Directions:
Ready for these ‘mindblowing’ instructions?
Add a quarter size amount of Gorilla Glue to the back of the plate, add the paperclip and let it dry for a couple of hours. That’s it!
The paperclip isn’t facing any specific direction, just place it on, leaning on the seam of the plate.
**Important: Do NOT overdo it with the glue. Gorilla Glue will expand as it dries, and create a big bubbly ball that is nearly impossible to remove.
Once it’s dry you can hang it up. I’ve used this method over and over in my home over the years, and I’m happy to report that all of my plates are still hanging, even here in earthquake country!
So simple to hang your plates and other artwork, in a durable and inexpensive way.
Put away those not-so-attractive or cost friendly plate hangers, and DIY your own. Save the cash and the hassle, that’s what it’s all about!

Oh my goodness… do you remember when I did those lattice plates – the ones you have the same style of? The white ikea ones? Well, yeh, they are still not hung on my wall because I hated all of the plate hangers I have found. Way to blow my mind girl!

Thank you! I tried it with hot glue once (I was experimenting on what I could use to substitute real plate hangers), and I was woken up in the middle of the night with a hard crashing sound coming from my kitchen lol Thankfully they were thrift store plates, but needless to say I wouldn’t recommend hot glue on breakable plates. I have used it on wood chargers (not heavy) and hot glue did just fine. Thanks for stopping by and good luck!

I was skeptical until I heard the part in your post about “here in earthquake country”, as I live pretty much ON the San Andreas Fault in CA. I might try this with my non-antique plates 🙂 Thanks! I really cannot afford to buy the plate hangers at $3 each either…so this may help me! I don’t see why not since the Gorilla glue is so strong. You may need to give it some additional time to cure. Good luck!

Great question! I doubt it, but honestly I don’t know because I haven’t tried to, my plates are still up on the wall and this post is 2 years old!
