Took it home and got to (a little) work:
I painted it black right away and distressed it a bit. Since the paint on it was matte, there was no need to sand or remove the finish. The best kind of painting project if you ask me!
It needed a little padding for the many ‘bottoms’ it will be hosting (ha!) so I went to Michael’s and got a foam cushion in a roll.
I cut the foam to size and wrapped the fabric around it like you would a gift box, and secured it all with a hot glue gun, making sure it was nice and taut, but careful to not let the edges fold over.
I’d made those pillows a while back for other parts of the house, but guess what? I like them better on the cedar chest!!
The bold fabric of the pillows against the subtle print of the cushion and the rich black of the chest is what sold me!

Thank you Jill!! I forgot to mention that the fabric I used to pad the top came from Walmart! Can you believe it?! Thanks for the comment!

Wow, that is a steal! My grandmother gave me a Lane chest for my high school graduation and I just had the courage to paint it and recover it (the top is padded) a few years ago. It’s such a versatile piece of furniture! Yours looks great!

I found your post via Imparting Grace and am so impressed with this makeover. I have a Lane cedar chest in my basement that my husband had when we got married that could use a makeover similar to yours. I am sure that you are going to get a lot of compliments on this when you have visitors in your home.
