Good morning everybody! First I would like to thank Barbara for inviting me to guest post – I love her blog and it really is an honor to be here! Today’s post is how I took a 60’s or 70’s wood mirror ( these were typically on either end of a dresser ) and turn it into an antique looking french chateau mirror. You can find these mirrors almost anywhere for very reasonable prices – I bought 2 of them for 15.00 each but I’m sure you can find them much cheaper than that! Here’s a photo of what I started with
Try to find something with “relief” on it because that’s what makes the details pop – but if you only have a plain mirror to work with you can always buy an applique or two from Home Depot……………. First I painted it with a custom color of Duck Egg and Pure White ( Annie Sloan ) And then I painted over the flower design with pure white –
this does not have to be perfect – in fact imperfection on this type of project is probably best – remember we are trying to make it look very old and worn
I also painted out a little of the trim – again to make it stand out I actually am loving the clean look of the white against the blue – but alas these mirrors were purchased to go with this dresser so I have to start dirtying it up now –
First I waxed with clear wax – which is an absolute must – if you skip this step you are absolutely doomed because the dark wax stains as soon as it touches the paint – if you put it on top of of clear wax you can wipe away until you get the desired effect you’re looking for.
I put it on quite liberally as you can tell lol – once you’ve applied it, you start rubbing it in – don’t worry if it goes darker than you had planned – you simply add more clear and the dark wax will come off – and that’s it basically – you work it until you have the desired effect.
and that’s how you do in a half hour – what it would take father time to do in 50 years. not a bad match considering the mirror doesn’t belong to it at all
Thanks so much Barbara – it’s was fun!!! Big hugs – and a very happy week to all :) XOX Suzan
