Summer Wreath {Easy DIY}

Hey friends! Summer decor is in full swing around here so that means my glue gun is out and I’m getting some craftin’ done! I made this fun Summer Wreath with a little nautical and whimsical flare to it for my front door..

I had an idea to incorporate flip flops on my wreath this year, but I really had no clue how I’d do that!

So I did what I usually do when in this situation, I went to Michaels!  They had this fab pair of blue flip flops for just $1.59 (score)!  While at the store I walked through the aisles looking for more inspiration.

I found:

7ft of rope

1 wood wreath form

2 wood ‘anchor’ appliques

the letter ‘H”

orange ribbon

I decided to bring it all home and figure out how to put it together there!

I found a brand new pack of wood shims that I’d forgotten I had in my garage. and decided to make a wood ‘plank’ backdrop and add the rest to it.

Here’s how it came together:

13 shims were glued together with hot glue

The piece was turned over and 3 shims were placed perpendicularly and glued with Gorilla glue to make sure they stay put.

The plank piece was painted in blue using Decoart Outdoor paint.

Then the wood wreath form was glued on to the center.

Once the rope was wrapped onto the wreath form and glued in place, the rest of the pieces followed!

Lastly, I added a sawtooth hook to the back.  Because the wood shims are so thin, I didn’t want to nail anything into them, so you guessed it, I glued instead!

The anchors were painted in white, and the letter in bright orange (mixed red and yellow acrylic paint), and after some thought I decided to leave the ribbon off.   I love that the ‘H’ pops!

Woot!  I don’t know about you but I’m ready to  hit the beach!

What have you crafted up to get ready for summer?

Hi! I found your blog via hometalk and love your projects! This wreath is so fun and cute (I’m a sucker for beach themed anything). I am creating a curated board on HT and just clipped your map night stand. Outstanding! :)

Also, I think I’m a close neighbor, I live in Placentia, CA, lol. Come say “hi” sometime- http://www.myclevernest.com!

Love, love the wreath! BUT, what store did you purchase the shims & what is the length? Lowe’s had some I bought, but they are way to short. Also, I bought the wreath at Michael’s & not sure what size you bought? Please let me know, as I also bought the flip flops & anchors.

    Thank you! mary

      Mary,
Thank you! Ok so I just went outside to measure! The shims are from Home Depot, the length is 16″. The wooden wreath form is 9″ in circumference. Hope that helps you! I’d love to see your version of it! Send me a pic if you can!
