Hey, hey! It’s that weird time of year for decor, post holidays, yet pre-spring..what do we hang on our front doors? Valentine’s day is around the corner, but I have a house full of boys, I am not sure that I can pull off red and pink all over the place, so what’s an outnumbered girl to do? Well I decided that as part of my Michaels’ challenge this month, I’d use their Make Market line to make a fun and rustic ‘wreath’!
See the stained wood heart is great for Valentine’s day, but it’s not so ‘girly’ that my boys will puke when they open the front door. To appease my girly side, I added a touch of bright blue to go with the flowers that will soon be in bloom come spring! I put this wreath together really easily, and with just a few items from the Make Market line, available at Michaels’ stores!
Materials:
From the Make Market line at Michaels:
Wood and metal plaque
Stained wood heart
Distressed letter
Also available at Michaels:
Americana craft paint in Blue Lagoon and Coffee Bean
Small sponge applicator
Sand paper (light grit)
Glue gun and glue stick
You’ll notice that I also picked up a roll of ribbon in an Ikat pattern. I intended to hang the wreath from it, but then decided I will wait to do that until Spring is actually here. The bright colors will work perfectly with the seasonal plants and flowers.
Directions:
Paint the wood trim of the plaque in Blue Lagoon, let dry (wipe any excess that lands on to the metal with a damp paper towel).
Using a small amount of paint in Coffee Bean, make small marks on the blue in a random pattern. Go over the edges to give it an aged look. Allow to dry completely.
Lightly go over the entire wood part with the sandpaper. Make sure to not press too hard, we are trying to remove a little bit of the paint, but not expose the natural wood underneath.
Optional:
Choose which orientation you’d like your plaque to hang. The plaque is set to hang vertically, but I decided to hang it horizontally which required removing the twine string it comes with, and moving it over to the other side of the plaque. I used a staple gun to secure it.
Hot glue the wooden heart to the center of the plaque, then hot glue the letter to the center of that. Both of those are already either stained, or painted, and distressed, etc. so this part is a breeze!
This collection of surfaces, letters, frames and more come in modern, eclectic or rustic styles. From natural and finished woods, to a variety of metals, resin and patterned styles, the possibilities are endless.
Hang it on your front door! Or hang it on the back door! Or hang it over your mantel. Or, on a wall in your home. You get the picture!
I simply adore this personalized Rustic Wreath! I think this will grace my front door long after spring has sprung!
