Handling Life’s Storms

Another rainy day here in southern California. Seems like we’ve had more of those than not the last few weeks. Just when we start to see a break in the clouds and the sun is out like the beautiful spring day it should be, the rain starts up again as the sky starts to release some much needed water over the earth.

Another little league game cancelled, another night indoors, another cup of smooth hot chocolate to warm the tummy!

Stuck indoors this evening (we don’t do well outdoors in the rain around these parts!), my husband noticed the most beautiful sight in our backyard..

A double rainbow peeking out from behind the grey clouds, seemingly right over our kid’s playhouse!

If you’ve read any of my previous posts, you’ll know I hate rain! I grew up in south Florida where it rains A LOT, and honestly one of the reasons I love living in California now is because of our perfect weather-most of the time! This gorgeous reminder of God’s natural wonder really got me thinking though..after the rain, there is always a rainbow.

13 I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and with all the earth. 14 When I send clouds over the earth, the rainbow will appear in the clouds, 15 and I will remember my covenant with you and with all living creatures. Never again will the flood waters destroy all life. 16 When I see the rainbow in the clouds, I will remember the eternal covenant between God and every living creature on earth.” Genesis 9:13-16

I’ve known this to be true in so many instances in my life, I’ve lost count! He always leads us to something beautiful after the ugly storm.

I waste lots of time complaining about rain, cold weather and ‘when will the sun come out?’. Knowing the results will be lush green fields, blooming flowers, and crystal clear skies, I choose too often to focus on the misery of the momentary rain, and never on the magnificent rainbow that is sure to follow. Handling life’s storms can be difficult

Why do we focus on the negative?  Why do we fail to see the lesson in the situation we are in?  Why do we not see beyond what our human eyes perceive, and look for the rainbow in the horizon?  There is a season for everything under the sun.

For everything there is a season,
a time for every activity under heaven.
2 A time to be born and a time to die.
A time to plant and a time to harvest.
3 A time to kill and a time to heal.

A time to tear down and a time to build up.
4 A time to cry and a time to laugh.
A time to grieve and a time to dance.
5 A time to scatter stones and a time to gather stones.
A time to embrace and a time to turn away.
6 A time to search and a time to quit searching.
A time to keep and a time to throw away.
7 A time to tear and a time to mend.
A time to be quiet and a time to speak.
8 A time to love and a time to hate.A time for war and a time for peace.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

Do you dwell on things that are out of your control?

How do you handle life’s inevitable ‘storms’?
