New Blinds in the Bedroom

A couple of weeks ago I told you all about my experience shopping for blinds for my boys room. I went to Lowes and chose the Levolor Faux Wood Cordless blinds and got a fun tour of the cutting machine but didn’t need it because lucky me–my window is the exact width of the 47″ blinds they had in the box.  I felt so cool walking out of there with my perfect blinds for my equally perfect windows!  Fast forward to installation day, and my seemingly perfect window seems to have shrunk 1.5 inches.  Imagine that!!  Surely, I didn’t measure wrong or anything…

Well it turns out I didn’t measure wrong! Just before my husband could read me the riot act for not reading the measuring tape correctly we realized that our ‘perfect’ windows, AREN’T.  DOH!  I measured the bottom end of the window, which is a perfect 47″.  Why bother getting a step ladder to measure the top of the window when it should be the same all the way around, right? Well my 1980’s fabulously constructed home is, gasp–FLAWED!  The window measurement shrinks by a whopping 1.5″ at the top.  Back to Lowe’s I went.

This time I got to watch the cutting machine in action.  The super nice employee at the store cut them down to an even 45″, to allow a 1/4″ space on either side.  This is to accommodate the brackets up top and to not have the blinds rub up against the walls.  It makes perfect sense!

The blinds were for my kid’s room, which has one window.  Because of it’s awkward shape (remember it’s awesome construction from the 80’s), we had to place their bunk beds directly in front of the window, with only a small space between. That little empty space did make the perfect home for the DIY Bookcase I made a few months ago..so no complaints there 🙂 but that leaves very little light for the rest of the room.

I thought blinds would make it even darker so I didn’t bother to put anything more than curtain panels.  Their room is on the second floor so privacy isn’t an issue.  Well I didn’t think so until I noticed a few weeks ago that you can see clear into the kid’s room as you pull out of the driveway and onto the road.  As a mom that made me a little nervous, and I suddenly started to look for options to cover it up but not give up on the little light that the room does get.

Levolor is great because their cordless blinds and shades are “Safer for pets & Children” there are no dangling cords!  They provide a clean easy look to the room–they really look like painted wood!  Best of all if you’re impatient like I am, you can buy them, get them custom cut and take them home the same day!

I love my new Levolor Faux Wood Cordless blinds!
I love the polished look of the 2.375″ blinds in their room, they’re durable, and most importantly my boys now have a little more privacy, which makes this mama happy!  Now I’m considering replacing my window coverings throughout the house with brand new Levolor cordless faux wood blinds..I better let my husband do the measuring this time 🙂

Special thanks to my friends at Lowes and Sverve for sponsoring this post. All opinions are 100% mine.

Yay that you were able to easily get the blinds trimmed! They look great. And don’t feel bad, I would have made the same mistake. One just asssumes a window would be square! A good lesson for all of us.

I guess this falls into the category of “all’s well that ends well” right? They look great, and your adventure makes for a great story! (Love the little bookshelf BTW)

When I was a kid, my Dad measured our house windows like you did and when they got the order, realized all of the windows in the house had the same wonky type measurements like you do. I think uneven window measurements are an industry standard 🙂
