DIY Driftwood Sailboat {Summer Fun Camp 2013}

What’s shakin’ lovelies?!  The beach has officially set up camp at my house, so today I’m sharing one of my favorite beach themed projects with you, my super fun..

DIY Driftwood Sailboat!

This project is part of the Summer Fun Camp 2013, brought to you by Kirsten from One Tough Mother.  She’s the mastermind behind this super fun ‘camp’ which involves 4 week long events focusing on keeping your kids busy this summer.  She’s featuring some of my favorite bloggers, so I’m honored and so excited to work with her and the rest of the gang!  This week’s theme is the beach!

How to DIY a Driftwood Sailboat

On your next trip to the beach (so like–tomorrow) pick up a piece of driftwood as to close to ‘boat’ shape as possible!

Ours is pretty big, about 15×12″ weighing in at about 8 lbs.  This was the only suitable piece we found, if  possible, I suggest something easier for your kid’s to handle!

For Parents:

Drill a hole in the center

For Kids:

Send your kids out to find the coolest, and curviest twig in your yard!

This is what my littles came up with.  Not too much curvature in California twigs apparently!

Parents:

Cut the twig to size (eye ball it), then hot glue the twig into the hole in the driftwood..allowing it to dry.

Have the kids choose a fun fabric or even an old t-shirt to make the sail!  I repurposed old pillow covers to make ours!

To make the sail, simply cut a triangular piece of fabric wide enough to cover the span of your driftwood, and hot glue it to the twig!  Teather the corners of the ‘sail’ some twine, and more hot glue!

Because each piece of driftwood will be different, there is no uniform way to add the sail.  I played around with placement until I got it right!

I will admit my sailboat isn’t one the kid’s can play with per se, however you can make a very kid friendly version with a few adjustments, namely, a much smaller piece of driftwood!

If you aren’t near the ocean, then grab an old piece of weathered wood or even a small block of wood from the home improvement store would work!

Mommy and son love to craft together….
