Denim Spring Banner

Valentine’s day is officially in the past, now it’s time to start talking about all things SPRING!  While our weather in Southern California has been mild for weeks, I know some of you in other parts of the world may still be freezing your tushies, so perhaps a little springtime crafting will brighten up your mood in anticipation for sunshine and spring blooms!

Denim is a big trend this year, and has been popping up in crafts and home décor, in fact Michaels has named denim the craft trend of 2015! .  To embrace this fun trend I made a Spring Banner using denim pockets, ribbon, and embellishments from Michaels new Make Market line, all made with simple, on-trend surfaces and textures like chalk, denim, galvanized, burlap and cork.

DENIM SPRING BANNER

Materials:

Denim pockets banner from Michaels

Magnetic metal embellishments from the Make Market line (including letters)

Ribbon or fabric scraps (I used canvas ribbon in pretty spring prints)

Scissors

Hot glue gun/ glue stick

Directions:

Since the banner is already assembled and ready to decorate, this is quite a simple craft!  The banner is comprised of 7 denim pockets, so I chose to spell out the word ‘SPRING’, with the S, P, R on the first 3 pockets, and the I, N, G on the last 3. A little bit of hot glue will do the trick.  On the center pocket I added a pretty little spring birdie, while on either end I put a beautiful butterfly.  The embellishments are metal with magnets on the back so they can be used in other projects as well.

Adding the ribbon:

If you have fabric scraps in pretty spring patterns then by all means use them up!  I didn’t have quite the right color combination, so I opted to purchase thick canvas ribbon instead.  I bought 4 patterns, cutting 3 16″ strips of each.  Using 2 strips of ribbon per section, I tied them in a simple knot, leaving about 1-1 1/2″ on top.  Once they were all tied and the length looked good, I cut each strip down the center to give them a little ‘ragged’ look. The edges on the ribbon are perfect which is great if I didn’t want them to look like fabric scraps!  Running a scissor through them makes them look like they are scraps of fabric that I had in my craft stash that work incredibly well together 🙂

Total crafting time: just 30 minutes!
