Happy July! I’m so excited to tell you that I’m part of the Red, White, and Blue series at Sugar Bee Crafts!
DIY Wood Flag
For my part in the series, I created a wood flag that is so easy to put together, it took less than an hour to make..so there’s still time to get crafty before your 4th of July party!
If you want to whip up this Wood Flag, here’s what you’ll need:
17 wood shims
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Gorilla Glue (or another strong adhesive)
Red, White, and Navy blue paint (acrylic or latex)
Chevron stencil (this one is from Royal Designs)
Wood stain
Sandpaper
4 Foam brushes
How to DIY a Wood Flag {4th of July Craft}
Step 1: Assemble!
Put your shims together; simply stack 13 them together and use the hot glue to keep them in place.
Turn the piece over. Using the Gorilla Glue adhere the remaining 4 shims perpendicularly to secure the piece. Add something heavy on top and let it dry for a while. I always have watermelon handy in the summer, they’re great paperweights :)
Step 2: Paint!
Once the shims are completely dry, turn the piece right side up and paint it all white.
Step 3: Stencil!
Hold your stencil in place and dab on the red paint, carefully!
Leave the top 5 rows in the upper left corner (about 5-6 inches out) white.
Remove the stencil and fix any bleed-throughs–I can never avoid these!
Once the paint dries, move the stencil to top blank corner and hold it in place. Paint that part in navy.
Step 4: Distress! {Totally optional!}
Take the sand paper and go over the entire piece lightly, make sure the wood shows underneath a little. Add a little stain to the entire piece, and wipe it off with a paper towel to give it a vintage look! You know I love me some vintage wood!
You can display it like I did on my 4th of July mantel! Another option is to decorate a 4th of July party table with it, or add a hook to the back and hang it on your door, just so many choices! Can you tell I’m excited about this one?

Have you made any Red, White, and Blue DIY projects this year?

What a great idea to use the wood shims! And I love the chevron pattern, a nice twist on the regular stripes.
