So I’ve been busy. I mean really, really busy! I’ve been invited to participate in my very first Craft Boutique and I’m SO excited, but did I mention I’m BUSY?! I’ve been whipping up new projects every day in preparation.
One of the items I’ll be selling is this cute little stool I found at a nearby thrift store. I snatched it up the moment I saw it.
How To Makeover a Wood Stool (or any Wood Piece)
Materials:
Repairs-
If your piece has dents, or needs to be glued, do this first. My stool had a nick, so I filled it with wood putty and let it set overnight.
Sanding-
Start by running the sander all over your piece, removing any old paint or stain. My stool had a high gloss stain finish so it took a little longer to get it back to the raw wood.
Prime your piece-
I used Zinsser Cover Stain spray (it’s my go-to primer!), sprayed it all over and let it dry.
Using a spray primer is great because it’s lightning fast to apply and dry, but it can leave a sort of ‘rough’ finish. With the sanding block I went over the piece to smooth it out. Took no time at all, and still much easier than applying primer with a brush!
Ready for paint |
Paint your piece!
This is the fun part! I had two awesome shades of blue I’d used here and here that I mixed together to make this beautiful shade of pale aqua! It’s saved in a mason jar in my craft closet (cool Pinterest trick)! I plan on using every bit of it!
Once the stool was painted and dry, I used the sanding block to distress the edges focusing on the usual areas of wear and tear, the edge of the seat, the foot rests, and the ridges on the legs. Removing some of the surface paint revealed a little bit of the white primer and some of the wood. This gives it a ‘distressed’ look, which I love! Looks like the piece has a long history, and who knows, it just might!
I went over those exposed edges with a little walnut stain and a foam brush (wiping off the excess with a paper towel), just to give the wood a little more impact. This is totally optional. Another option is to glaze it to give it a more aged look.
If she doesn’t sell then I may just have no choice but to keep her (wink)!
I’ve been thinking about decoupaging a map on the seat..perfect excuse to use my Mod Podge, and can add some interest to the piece, what do you think?

You made this into an interestingly different piece! I have an old wooden chair sitting in my back yard getting some “weather” on it (saves sanding), to be painted and distressed in the next week or two.

Adorable! I can see why you want to keep it. Thanks for stopping by Posed Perfection recently and leaving me comment love. I, too, have been swamped with life and have not had the time to come around and thank you for your sweet words of encouragement. As far as the Nerf Party goes, I would highly recommend it. Very easy and the boys (big and small) love it. Have a great week!
Blessings,
Nici

I love it! I just picked up a similar stool a few weeks ago at a yard sale (already painted a high gloss white)…but, I’m wanting to repaint it. You have definitely given me some great ideas! Thanks for the ideas…you know what they say about great minds ;)

I love this stool. It caught my eye on the Cheerios and Lattes link party.
Why is it that we suddenly love the old and worn look? Years from now, I think we will all be stripping paint off things and staining them wood tones again! But for now, I do love it!
Great job.
