Hello friends!
A few weeks ago, I wrote about some wood plates I bought at a thrift store. It was love at first sight. True.Love. True love for $0.99 each. That’s right folks, under a buck. Looove.
Aren’t they the prettiest?
I decided to try to do something different this time. I’ve seen so many beautiful cupcake stands on Pinterest lately, I thought well hey, why not?!
Back at the thrift store I found this Mikasa (gasp!) taper holder for just $2.99. Another.Fabulous.Score! I heart Goodwill!
I was excited to get started!
Here’s how I did it:
After some very light sanding, I used my trusty E-6000 glue to adhere the glass candle holder to the wood plates.
The smaller part went on the bottom plate so that there would be more workable space later.
I let it dry overnight.
Using a level I made sure the plates were lined up correctly. A cupcake stand with unintentionally misaligned tiers is just wrong! (ha!)
The next day I primed the whole thing; yes the glass too!
Already looking great!
I used Zinsser Cover Stain, cause it’s like awesome. Enough said.
Then added a couple of coats of white spray paint in a satin finish and let that dry.
Afterwards, with some sandpaper, I went to town, distressed it a bit to softly expose the lovely ornate wood design underneath, and give it a vintage and worn feel. I even went over the glass piece with the sand paper lightly to complete the look.
To seal it, I used Mod Podge spray in a matte finish.
A very important note:
These are not plates I intend to directly place food on, so I wasn’t worried about chemicals. I will be using cupcake liners, or another type of liner to hold any edible items :)
I happened to have a small glass cloche belonging to a cake plate that I’d recently purchased (second hand, of course!) that wouldn’t-ya-know-it fit on the top plate likeaglove.
…maybe the plates are vintage? Or perhaps they were made in China just last year. I don’t know. What I do know is that I love what they’ve become, so I’m a happy girl :)
So that’s how I used up 2 more of those awesome wood chargers from the thrift store, what do you think?!
