Dressing up the Front Porch-Herb Planter Makeover
Not allowed in the house |
Now that it’s cleared up and the winter chill is on its way out (I know it’s Cali so I can’t really call it a ‘chill’), I’m stoked to welcome SPRING!
‘Tis the season (not that season!) for flowers, greenery, lush pastures, and all things a growin’.
I’m working on my spring wreath project..by ‘working’ I mean it’s all planned out and will become reality sometime this weekend. I hope. While that’s cooking up in my mind, I’d like to share what I’ve done on the front porch so far..
Bursting with spring color! |
I’m not one to change every detail of my décor every season, instead, I like to add to what’s existing (enter spring wreath that lives in my head for now) since it usually takes forever to figure out what I want to do with a space and even longer to bring it to fruition.
These days I love to accent with color, and I especially loooove (with extra O’s for ‘oomph’) different shades of blue. Oh how I love BLUE! LOVE IT! So in planning out the porch space, I went with what I know to be the loveliest blue in all the land (and I know blue) turquoise! And what compliments turquoise better these days than a pretty shade of red?? Ooooooh (notice the extra O’s), how I love that color combo!
Another thing I looooove lately is a Damask pattern. Loooove! |
We haven’t been in this house very long, and as much as needs to be done, we are on a serious budget for a while. I find myself having to ‘make-over’ some items that were left behind, quite a bit. Take a look at what the bistro set looked like before I painted it in the rust color:
Bistro Set BEFORE (not pretty), we won’t mention the astro turf (equally un-pretty) |
Also note the formerly white screen gate/door I painted a glossy black (working on the hubs to get rid of it altogether –failing miserably so far, sigh).
BEFORE-mint green |
Since I seem to be fighting a losing battle I wanted to add a few accents to compliment the black door so I went with painting a plastic flower pot a glossy shiny black, and adding our house numbers on to it in bright white for contrast.
AFTER-A fabulous and modern lookin’ flower pot! |
I didn’t stop there, cause you know that’s kind of how I roll! It needed to be complimented by another plant receptacle type thing in the same color scheme–in my novice opinion that is. So my resident gardener husband brought home this cool redwood planter from the home improvement store and my wheels started churning.
Of course it couldn’t stay in its natural state albeit beautiful and all. This will be the compliment piece to my house number pot. It was meant.to.be. Off to the supply closet I went.
It was going to be an herb garden planter and it was going to be fabulous, I decided.
After spraying the front of the planter with a light coat of primer (all I had but any shade of white would’ve worked perfectly), and letting it dry for about 30 minutes, I used vinyl letters (that I got at Walmart ages ago, for like $2) to spell out the names of the herbs.
I like to make sure to use a level and even make lines with a pencil to keep the wording straight! |
Then I sprayed a couple coats of black over the whole thing and let that sit until it was dry to the touch.
Somebody get me some lotion |
I really love the way the porch is looking so far. Have plans for lots more out there, but for now after adding the wreath this weekend (don’t quote me), this will be it!
Take a look at this beautiful Spring/Easter wreath I found on Uncommon Designs :

I love the Robin’s Egg Blue (of course!), especially when combined with the burlap. I like to pair a ‘rough’ material like burlap (or wicker) with a contemporary design to add texture and bring a natural element to the overall look. I have oodles of burlap remnants to do just that!
Let’s see how my version of this wreath turns out this weekend..wish me luck!

Thank you for saying that! I had the ‘so can we get rid of it now??’ convo with the hubs just yesterday, and he still refuses, so it’ll be part of our family for a while..if he changes his mind, I’ll make sure to email it right over to you! Thanks for following, I follow you too!

GREAT job on the whole porch! Love the planter too…I need something like that for my herbs this year. I left all my cute little pots outside too long last season and they cracked. Waah! Now I have to start over! Thanks for sharing at Shine on Fridays! Love that turquoise too!

Thanks Amy!! Don’t feel bad about your herbs..I have to have my husband plant *everything* in our yard because I would kill it all! Thanks for hosting!
