One of my favorite things to do during the holiday season is to craft with my son. I know these days won’t last forever so for now I’m soaking it up when I can! I picked up a couple of plastic craft ornaments at the craft store and used some Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles to make cute and simple ornaments that even my 7 year old could handle! You may already have some in your pantry, since Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles have been around about 40 years! But nowadays, the fun goes beyond the breakfast bowl. With their vibrant colors, they are perfect for kid’s crafts, especially when you let them snack on some while we work :) Fruity Pebbles is my son’s favorite so it wasn’t too difficult to get him to want to craft with Mommy (wink). You can get really creative (think cereal sculpture), or you can do something as simple as just gluing the cereal onto a piece of paper over a cool drawing.
Even this project can be as easy or complicated as you want it to be. Since I did it with my 7 year old, I decided to just fill the plastic balls to create 2 types of ornaments; red and green, and alternating Cocoa and Fruity Pebbles.
Materials and Directions:
Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles
Plastic ball craft ornament
Baker’s twine in red and white
White painting pen
For the red and green ornament: Fruity Pebbles-have your kids help you sort out enough reds and greens to fill the plastic ball to the top. For the multi color, layer a row of each cereal into the ornament. Start with Cocoa, then add Fruity, and alternate. Add the Baker’s Twine to the top to make a loop for hanging. Then hand write your favorite holiday phrase onto the front with the white painting pen.
These days the holiday season is the only time I can get him to sit still long enough to work on crafts. I love finding fun ideas to create with my son! In this case he was able to snack on some yummy cereal while learning that with some imagination, you really can make something beautiful out of the most unusual things!
