It’s hard to believe but it’s time to start decorating for the holidays! Like last year my fellow Michaels Makers and I were asked to decorate our dream tree. A challenge that sounds easy enough, given how many beautiful holiday decorations we can find at Michaels, but friends, don’t let that fool you! There are so many amazing items to choose from, narrowing it down to the perfect style is the most difficult task of all! After much thought and consideration, I decided to go with white, gold, and rustic. Not too far from my Burlap and Sparkle tree from last year, which incorporated some red, but when you know what you like, you tend to stick with it. The selection at Michaels is fresh every year so I was able to stay within a similar style, yet give this year’s Dream Tree a flair that is all its own!
First things first, the tree is a Pre-Lit Hartford measuring at 7.5′. I love it because it’s full and of course the hard part is already done for you, it’s pre-lit with pretty white lights. I wanted to use this one in my dining room which has primarily white decor, so I adhered to a pale palette of shimmery whites and golds. Pretty neutrals like burlap ribbon, brown craft paper to wrap the gifts, and a rustic wood marquee star, add the perfect natural touch.
Before I decorated I lightly sprayed artificial snow to random branches for an elegant look. I wiped the floor immediately afterwards since it caught some of the falling spray and I let it set for a couple of hours.
Michaels has a fantastic assortment of gorgeous decor for the holidays regardless of your personal style, I went with different shades of classic gold and white ornament balls, and then opted for a combination of fancy and cute ornaments for a good balance. I chose different widths of ribbon to wrap around the tree for added texture.
My absolute favorite part of this tree is the topper. See, it’s not actually a tree topper. It’s a rustic marquee star that I found in the home decor aisle at Michaels.
I knew if I could figure out a way to get it to stay on the tree that I’d hit a home run! SI did a little simple DIY and what do you know? It totally worked! All it took was a small Phillips screwdriver to loosen the top 2 screws on the back of the star. Then using some thin yarn (I double it up, but twine would also work really well), wrapped the ends under the screws and tightened them back up to create a hanger. I rested the star near the top of the tree and hung it to a group of branches to keep it in place.
Using the same ribbon over craft paper for the gifts underneath the tree create continuity and adds a beautiful finishing touch! How pretty are those gift tags?
