If your family is anything like mine, you guys are always on the go! We’re all busy from wake up till bed time, and there are very few breaks in between. The kids have school all day and several times a week they are involved in sports which leaves little time for homework and anything else. We usually have about an hour window after school before we have to head out to practice or a game. With all the rushing around it’s very hard to keep the kids’ energy up, especially when it comes to eating well. I’ve found that making that after school time count is important to keeping them healthy and fueled for everything they have on their plates. The key to making that happen is establishing a routine. and following it every day.
We start off with something that is easy to forget:
Make sure they wash their hands! First thing they know they need to do immediately upon entering our home is head to the guest bathroom and wash those grubby little hands. Especially my 2nd grader who manages to come home with the blacktop playground all over his face, legs, and hands. Before they touch anything in house, their hands need to be squeaky clean. If they keep their hands clean we can all get sick a little less often. We can deal with the rest of their bodies later!
Grab a SunnyD from the fridge. Not only do they love the delicious taste of SunnyD, but along with a light snack like a piece of fruit or some carrots, it’s a great way to keep them fueled without spoiling their dinners.
Get as much homework done as possible. We have an eighth grader who needs much more than an hour to complete his assignments, but he knows he needs to get some of it out of the way before practice. Usually any required reading and some math can get done during this time.
Take a few minutes to play outside. This may seam redundant given that they are likely headed out to their sports soon, but a little free play is great for the body and the mind! Let them “cut loose” for a few minutes to relieve a little bit of the day’s stress. If they don’t take breaks to just be “kids” they can get overwhelmed, and that isn’t good for anyone!
A few healthy habits to practice after school can help kids successfully manage all of their activities and responsibilities.

Teachers will then send the labels into SunnyD to get free books. For every 20 labels received, SunnyD will donate 20 free books! (expires on 11/30/15 or while supplies last).
Follow these simple steps:
Step 1: Parents clip and collect eligible SunnyD UPC labels.
Step 2: Parents send UPC labels with their child to a participating teacher.
Step 3: Teachers collect UPCs, fill out the entry form and mail both to SunnyD.
Step 4: SunnyD sends books to participating classrooms (limit of 20 books/classroom).

Now that I am all grown up, I can appreciate SunnyD as more than just a delicious part of my kid’s healthy after school habits, but I am also grateful for their support of local schools. As a mom of school aged kids, how could I not love them?
