Over the Fireplace Ideas– What to put over the fireplace is a common design issue. These ideas go beyond just pictures and mirrors, DIY your own designer look for a fabulous mantle!
Hey friends, how the heck are ya? I really hope the new year is going well for you so far. I will admit that I am just cracking open the computer for the first time since Christmas, and although I really needed the break, oh-em-geesh I’m so glad to be back! Over the break I’ve been taking down the holiday decorations and in doing so I’ve been rethinking my decor up in here. Usually I take the mantel decorations down and immediately move the non-holiday stuff back up. At times I change it up, other times it’s placed exactly as it was before, I can get crazy like that. This year though, something has come over me. My mantel has been completely empty for the last several days, and I am actually going to take my time in figuring out what to do with it. It’s not so much the mantel that is troubling me, as much as the wall above it.
Clearly the wall needs a little love so I am considering adding some sort of treatment to it. As always I want to keep whatever I do easy, cost effective and not too time consuming. I’ve been looking online for ideas and came up with a few that I really like, check ’em:
I love how simple and elegant this ship lap wall looks over that gorgeous mantel. I would love to do something like this over mine, but perhaps just the flat planks instead of adding wood to protrude from the wall to save time and money.
This board and batten grid wall is similar to what we did in our master bedroom, and I LOVE it! This one also jets out from the wall, but can definitely be an option if we mount it flush to the wall. Especially since we already have the tools and know-how.
Rustic meets contemporary in this fabulous room! The rustic wall over the fireplace is making me giddy, like for reals! I can’t stop staring at it, and I ADORE the sunburst mirror hanging from it. What a great way to combine indoors and out. If my wall wasn’t a dark grey I’d totally do this! However it does give me an idea to perhaps do my own variation of this with distressed and chipped painted white wood planks. Ok I’m getting really excited!! :)
This wall jets out lightly, but I love how a simple coat of white paint against a colored wall (like this pretty shade of blue) ‘pops’ to showcase artwork. In my space I’d opt to add molding to the long sides of the white area. Looks simple and can probably be done inexpensively…perfect!
If I had a corner fireplace I’d do exactly this! Flat planks on the wall add a regal touch without looking gaudy or overdone. The wall looks beautiful not to mention super easy and cost effective according to Sarah at Thrifty Decor Chick. Definitely a contender!
I love the natural look of this mantel with the contemporary brick.
Flanking this built in mirror (held with plaster) with gorgeous molding was not only genius, but aesthetically it’s gor-geous! She took an eyesore and made it a spectacular focal point for her living space. I love this and can definitely see it in my own home.
The painted white brick!!! Oh I can so do this in my space. It would look so bright and polished against the dark grey wall!
The red brick reminds me of my fireplace, and the vertical wood slats with a thin molding can add height to my space. I love this look!
They all look so good! I think we can handle a variation of any one of these if we plan carefully. You may notice a common theme, all add light to the spaces, even the dark rustic planks are flanked with white built-ins. With a dark grey wall and limited light in the space I need to make sure that I don’t do anything too dark or my room will look closed in. Which is fine, if you like that look! :)
Which one of these would you choose?
