Happy Wednesday! I’ve been so lucky to have had the opportunity to write a few posts for the fabulous Ribbon Retreat blog over the summer for their ‘Oh Boy’ series which is all about boy related projects. The first post was for my boy’s bathroom, a No Sew Shower Curtain Valance. Next up is my super easy, and needless to say, inexpensive Duck Tape Rug. I thought I’d share it here too, in case you missed the post at the Ribbon Retreat.
Spruce up your boy’s bedroom, playroom, or any other space in the house, with a Striped Duct Tape Rug!
Duct Tape Rug
To make this rug I ordered a few rolls of Duct Tape {I used “Duck” brand} in red, aqua, and a black and a white checkered pattern from the Ribbon Retreat. There are tons of colors and patterns to choose from, you can even order Duct Tape with your college team’s logo on it!
Duct tape (or ‘duct tape’) is incredibly versatile. It’s durable, inexpensive, and can be easily patched or replaced. Let’s face it, with boys, it’s important to have things that will last, and when they do tear or break, can be quickly repaired. This project is not only super simple but also really cost effective compared to buying a new rug.
If you want to make this Duct Tape rug, here’s what you’ll need:
An old rug with a solid back (this one is 5×8)
3 rolls of Duck brand tape {in your choice of colors!}
Level
Tape measure
Pencil
How to make a Duct Tape Rug
Step 1: Tape the edges of the rug. Using your pencil and level, mark off where you want your trim to come in, and tape your first row.
I used two rows of red tape all around, making sure to wrap about 1/4″ around the ends. The hardest part is keeping the tape even, so I took my time and let the level guide me.
Step 2: I measured the stripes 13″ apart estimating about 6″ each ‘stripe’, since there were 3 2″ rolls.
Step 3: Make sure your first row of tape is leveled. Add the other 2 rows, and then the rest of the stripes!
Make sure to press firmly as you smooth out the stripes.
It’s that easy!
In no time at all, and with very little expense you can have a cool new rug for your kid’s room!
My kids love it; Mom scores!
What do you think? Would you makeover one of your old rugs with Duct tape?

I love it!! Genius idea to repurpose an old rug. My daughter and I were just shopping at Target yesterday for a rug for her room. Unfortunately, they were a little above what we can spend at this time. I have some old rugs which she could use for this project. I love it!! Perfect timing!!
