Hey there friends! I hate to be the bearer of bad news (kid’s close your eyes) but we’re approaching the beginning of the new school year. I have so many projects planned {in my head} to get the kids ready! One of the items on my list is a new desk chair for my stepdaughter’s room. I teamed up with a group of bloggers and Coupons.com for Back to School season and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to get started on that!
What’s even more perfect is that my husband found a dining room chair curbside during a walk with the kids and called me right away (good man)..I ran over with the SUV and brought that baby home!
The chair is solid pine circa early 90’s and mass produced as part of a dining room set. I know this because I lived it. I remember this exact set in many of the big chain furniture stores back then. All in all it was in fantastic shape, and I knew that with a little TLC, some beautiful fabric from Joann Fabrics, and a few items from Home Depot, I can turn it in to a fab desk chair just in time for Back to School!
~This was a Saturday afternoon project!~
If you want to try it you’ll need:
An old chair (preferably with straight legs)
Chalk paint
{I used Annie Sloan brand that I already had on hand, but you can make your own chalkboard paint too}
2 Foam brushes
Polyurethane {satin finish}
Fabric {I shopped at Joann Fabrics}
Staple gun
4 Casters
Spray Paint in your choice of color {optional}
DIY Dining Room Chair to Desk Chair
Here’s how I did it:
I removed the cushion by removing the screws from under the chair.
I gave the chair a good scrub with soap and water, and an abrasive sponge.
Next I added two quick coats of the chalk paint. No sanding or priming, just brush it on and be done with it. That is the beauty of chalk paint—goes on easily and it’s a huge time saver!
While that was drying, I added two coats of turquoise spray paint to the casters.
{Make sure to use paint that will adhere to plastic}
Tip: to spray paint something that doesn’t have a flat base {cabinet knobs for example}, pierce holes into a piece of cardboard!
Why turquoise you ask? Because of the fabulous Robert Allen blue Ikat print fabric I bought at Joann Fabrics…swoon!
{I have a thing for blue, you may already know that}
To cover the chair cushion, I wrapped 1/2 yard of the new fabric over the existing fabric and stapled it in place.
At this point the paint was dry on the chair, so I added a coat of polyurethane to seal it.
Then I screwed the cushion back in using a drill {a Phillip’s head screwdriver would also do the trick}.
Lastly, and the most fun of all, adding the casters!
Just drill a hole under each leg, insert the metal casing (that comes with the casters pack), and insert the wheels.
The legs of my chair are slightly curved, for this project I suggest straight legs, because the caster’s stems are straight and you want to make sure that there is no risk of splitting later on. I think we’ll be fine, but just something to consider!
So fun! You can get really creative with the fabric and shade you use on the casters, to make a FUN and functional school desk chair!
