Terra Cotta Pot Tower

Hello lovelies!  Guess what I did this weekend?  I had a ‘craft night’ with my little guy!

{DIY Terra Cotta Pot Tower}

We made a Terra Cotta Pot Tower using supplies that I received from the folks at Plaid:

5 bottles of Apple Barrel paint  in Spring colors

1 bottle of  Mod Podge Washout

1 pack of fun stencils

3 foam applicators

How lucky am I?!

My first idea was to make the tower and add some clever Spring wording on it with the stencils.  Turns out my wording space was limited because my Terra Cotta pots weren’t large enough.  Boo.  However, I have gazillions of ideas for those stencils, so don’t think you’ve seen the last of them!

How to Make a Terra Cotta Pot Tower:

Step 1:

Gather up your materials: 3 Terra Cotta Pots in varying sizes, a large Terra Cotta platter, Apple Barrel paint, Mod Podge, and foam applicators.

I also used: Washi tape, a strong adhesive, and a foam brush for the painting

Step 2:

Paint your Terra Cotta pots

We chose one shade of the Apple Barrel paint on each pot.  My son started the job, and then I finished it with smooth, even strokes.  He said I did a ‘good job’.  🙂

Step 3:

Paint the rims {optional}

Since the wording idea went out the window, I decided to add some thick Washi tape to the rims of the pots instead.  The tape is transparent so I added a quick coat of white paint first.

Step 4:

 Mod Podge Washout can help ensure sure the Washi tape sticks over the paint.

To apply the Mod Podge, I added a thin coat of it over the white paint using the foam applicator, then had my son press the Washi tape down with his fingers.

Thankfully it’s ‘washable’ because guess where he loves to wipes his little hands? Moms in unisen: “on his clothes”, or ‘jammies’ in this case.

Step 5:

Lastly, I added a top layer of Mod Podge  over the entire pot {tape included} to protect our work.

They look cute just like this!

But I couldn’t leave well enough alone…

Step 6:

Build your tower!

Stack the Terra Cotta Pots upside down in descending order by size, and add your saucer to the top.  Secure them to each other with strong adhesive.

I used a small white bowl I had in the house….

…planted a hot pink Petunia in the center, and simply rested it on the platter.

The Apple Barrel paints went on evenly, and dried quickly.  That made it easy to complete this project in under an hour {less drying time}.

I also really love this new formula for the Mod Podge.  The “Wash Out’ part is my favorite because before this I was hesitant to let my kid’s use it for fear that they’d Mod Podge their clothes together or something silly like that. With Mod Podge Wash Out for Kids, I can literally wash it out with soap and water–even after it dries!!
