Happy Monday! This weekend was a busy one, lots of kid’s sports and errand running {nothing new}, but I did manage to get my craft on a little bit..I worked on my Snap Swap Lamp!
If you didn’t see my post from last week explaining the Snap Swap, click here; Vivienne from The V Spot and I went to the Habitat ReStore local to us and decided to buy matching lamps and give them a makeover!
Girl’s Room Lamp Makeover
This is what the lamps looked like before the makeover:
Mine is the ‘looker’ on the right.
..and here is the transformation.
I was going to try to come up with something super creative and ‘outside the box’, but then I decided that a simple and pretty makeover would work best.
The lamp is for my stepdaughter’s room which needed some additional task lighting.
This lamp is already uncommon in shape (square vs. round) so it has enough interest on its own {I reserve the right to change my mind and go crazy creative later}.
It was a simple makeover {anyone can do this}:
1. Remove the shade
2. Tape up the metal parts
3. Tape up the cord (this one tucked into the bottom of the lamp which was hollow)
4. Using gloss spray paint, spray the lamp lightly in short horizontal stokes
5. Several coats may be necessary {allow to dry at least 10 minutes between coats}
Covering the shade was also easy. The shade was square and not a typical drum shade. I had to cut the material into 4 pieces rather than wrap one large piece all the way around.
I purchased a 1/2 yard of beautiful blue and white fabric from Joanne Fabrics & Crafts
{$7.99/yd, on sale at $5.99/yd., only 1/2 yard= $3=SCORE!}.
I sprayed multipurpose adhesive to each side of the shade, one at a time. Then placed the fabric piece on it, pressing down firmly with my palms.
I cut the pieces about 1/4″ longer than the shade so I can tuck them under with the spray glue.
The lamp sits on her desk, which was also a thrift store find. Boy, you’d think I never buy anything new! You’re probably right.
I’m so pleased with how this pretty this thrift store lamp turned out! I especially love how simple and fast it was to makeover, it took about an hour or so, not including dry time.
It’s so fun to give something that is not-so-hot and unwanted, a whole new life, in no time at all!
When was the last time you went thrift store shopping?
By the way, check out the other Snap Swap projects circling the blogosphere below, there are some talented folks out there!
If you’re going to be at the Snap Conference next week, I can’t wait to meet you!

Thanks Crystal! Anything would’ve made that 80’s lamp look better!
Pam says
Hi Crystal!!!
I bought something new years ago (like 17) and since that horrific experience, I buy thrift!!
I’ve bought new items at thrift stores and have saved a bunch of $$$. There are things you
have to buy new, but, the majority of items…THRIFT!!!!
I love the lamp!!! It looks so new and up-to-date with what’s out there!!

How did you prepare the corners to keep the fabric from having raw edges on the corners of the lamp shade? Looks great!
Barbara @ Chase the Star says
Thanks Joy! I folded the edges and pressed against the spray glue! Carefully. Very carefully!
