This is a sponsored post by Royal Designs Studio. I was offered a free stencil in exchange for this review.
All opinions are 100% my own.
Hi, my name is Barbara and I’m a garage sale addict. There I admit it. Like a cliche, I brake for garage sales, estate sales, yard sales, you name it, if you’re selling it on your lawn I’ll be there!
I bought this tray about 6 months ago, for absolutely no reason at all. It was wood, it was begging for a makeover, and it was like $3. SOLD-pay the lady.
I was given the chance to review a stencil by Royal Design Studio, and I immediately thought ‘oh my tray!’ I chose the chevron pattern (in case you don’t know, I ‘brake’ for chevron too!) , and was thrilled at the chance to try it out!
When it arrived, and after I finished doing the ‘happy dance’, I got right down to business; revamping this second hand tray!
It had a separation on one of the corners, so I glued it together with wood glue, and let it dry completely.
I took the tray outside, sprayed it with some primer, painted it blue and distressed it.
I was planning on painting the chevron stripes in blue and white at first, so I could’ve just added white chevron stripes to the blue. At the last minute though (which is how I make most of my crafty decisions!), I decided to make it a little more interesting and paint the stripes orange and white instead.
I had to go back and paint the middle a solid white.
The stencil was so easy to use! I chose the small furniture stencil so it fit perfectly in the middle. I blotted the orange acrylic paint using a foam brush, and just followed the instructions in the package!
I went over the entire piece with a sanding block to distress it. The tray had pretty detail on the inside rim and the distressing really brought that out.
I’m using it on my coffee table for now, it’s great to hold remotes, books, and other things the kid’s leave on the couch.
Royal Design Studio has so many amazing options to choose from! The website has lots of great resources too, like a listing of workshops and events, stenciling tutorials, and so much more!
I have plans to stencil a rug, and some curtains, so I’m excited to have found a tutorial on how to stencil on fabric at Royal Design Studio, woot, woot!!
Do you use stencils in your crafting?

This is a really cute transformation! I am very much like you and can see when something needs a little help and turn into something fabulous! I recently bought a clearanced breakfast tray and made a very shabby chic looking breakfast in bed tray using wood stain and chalkboard paint! I love your style and am excited to take a look around your blog at your other projects!

super job Barbara! I use stencils (for names on my rustic wedding signs) however I don’t use any others, although I have tons! I should use some, I have many trays in my stash.
I think that’s something I could be doing even with a bum shoulder….
