I love a good bargain don’t you? There’s something about getting something dirt cheap that is just addicting, who’s with me?!
So while at a rare weekday garage sale nearby I stumbled upon this fabulous tray, and at $3, I had to have it. Actually it started at $6, but you know, I never pay ‘full’ price.
It really was a steal considering it’s real wood and at 24×24, I walked away with a smile :)
I thought it would work really well on my kitchen island, to take car of the ‘catch all’ problem we seem to have there. Ahem.
As soon as I brought it home I started to work on it to make it kitchen island worthy.
First things first, I sanded it lightly by hand, and added a coat of primer, my favorite, Zinsser Cover Stain.
Then I simply added a coat of white spray paint I had in my garage.
To add a little ‘drama’ and to coordinate it with my kitchen I added black acrylic paint with a small foam brush to the edges.
So far, so good, but to work with my self proclaimed
Farmhouse style kitchen, I distressed the edges with sand paper.
Oh yes, ‘beat-up’ is just the look I was going for!
See all the clutter it’s holding like the mail, car keys, cell phones, receipts, and more? Oh you don’t?
Mission accomplished.
I can put my cupcake fruit stand, cake lemon stand, napkin holder, etc., all in one organized spot.
Total cost just $3, plus some basic supplies already in my stash!
Do you buy second hand? If not, give it a shot, you’d be surprised how much you can get for next to nothing!

I LOVE to buy secondhand, my Husband? he hates it. Not the secondahnd part, but the pack rat part. I like to buy things i see a future in but then they sit and sit and sit, and then i finally start a project but rarely finish them. Its just a little habit i have. He calls my craft room the “land of the forgotten projects”. Your tray turned out great! I have had my eye on one at Target but now im inspired to make my own….
Barbara Hiatt says
Oh we have that in common Aleks. I have a garage full of junk I mean stuff I need to makeover! Thanks for stopping by!
