Hey there blog-sters!
I love thrift store finds. Going to the thrift store and exploring their aisles is a thrill for me, seriously. Perhaps this sounds tedious, or perhaps you may think I need a life. Both may be true, but let me just say–I don’t care! I walk in with $20 and walk out with a fabulous collection of junk collectibles!
During my last visit I came across a stellar piece of art!
Lovely, ain’t it?
In perfect condition, weighing in at 16×20 for just $3.99, darn right it was lovely! I snatched that baby up faster than you can say ‘blue light special’ (if you know what I’m referring to, you earn extra points!)
See, I had a remnant piece of ‘Route 66’ themed fabric I’d been wanting to use in my boy’s bathroom, but wasn’t sure how. Once I saw this little guy in that shiny, new-to-me black frame, I just knew I’d found the perfect solution.
This was such an easy project! I didn’t even take pictures of the ‘during’ process because it was done in no time!
- I simply removed the back, the picture, and the glass.
- Sprayed the frame with a ‘cover stain’ (Zinsser is my fave!).
- When it was dry I sprayed it with a couple coats of Krylon spray paint (in ‘pumpkin orange’).
- After that was fully dry, I took the sanding block to it and distressed the edges.
- During the dry time, I wrapped the fabric around the existing backing, and stapled it in place (I’m pretty sure hot glue would’ve worked just fine).
- Put the wrapped backing back in place and hung it up!

A thrifter after my own heart! What a fun piece of art – love the frame color!
Blue light special – of course I remember. And I remember eating at the K-mart luncheonette while my dad had his car serviced there!

There’s just nothing like a thrift store transformation, is there? This is great!
Just a couple of things I want to say:
Route 66 is one of my favorite Nat King Cole songs.
You’d better believe I know what a blue light special is! Do you remember when KMart would actually have a blue light attached to a cart and they’d move it around to different parts of the store? I sure do!
Chase the Star says
Oh wow, you really took it back with the shopping cart! I sure do remember! Don’t forget the ‘attention Kmart shoppers’ announcement as they were about to talk about their ‘blue light special’! The Route 66 theme is so nostalgic, I love it. Thank you for your sweet words, so glad you liked my little thrift store update!
