Hey! :) I shared this lamp makeover tutorial on my friend Janiene’s blog, A Bunch of Bishops, last week. If you didn’t get a chance to check it out, here it is!
I recently made over a lamp for my boy’s room, which is baseball themed. I wanted to create a look that was classic, but definitely still in tune with baseball, specifically the Boston Red Sox, their favorite team.
We’ve had his lamp in various rooms in our home over the years,
so in keeping with my love for up-cycling, the time has come for its makeover.
I found a perfect navy and white striped canvas shade at my local Goodwill, for just $5! And what’s better yet? It was new! Still had the plastic wrap and tags! SCORE!
Target Home collection, $4.99–aaww yeah! |
The lamp shade needed a pop of red, and I know my boys (the hubs included) love Ted Williams, which wore a #9 jersey for the Red Sox, so I decided to add a large red ‘9’ to it.
Problem was I don’t have a vinyl cutter (life isn’t fair, is it?!), and I couldn’t find the font anywhere in the size I needed.
As usual, I improvised.
I took my stepson’s baseball jersey, traced the number onto
regular copy paper, cut it out, and traced it directly
onto the shade with a pencil.
Carefully filled the number in with Cherries Jubilee by Glidden, my favorite shade of red!
I’ve used the same sample sized container on several projects including this subway dresser also for the boy’s room, and this nautical summer wreath. I still have enough for a couple more projects. Not bad for a $3 sample!
I added some Mod Podge spray in a matte finish over the number to make sure it doesn’t wear off over the years. Then I sprayed the lamp a glossy white to complete the look!
The boys love it so I’m happy:) A little bit of paint goes a long way!
Thanks as always for reading, see ya’ soon!

That lampshade was a GREAT find!! My son’s room is “vintage sports” themed so this certainly provided some great inspiration!
